Why is the shift to mobile devices disrupting so many?

9:34PM EST November 5. 2012 - USA TODAY markets reporter Matt Krantz answers a different reader question every weekday. To submit a question, e-mail Matt at mkrantz@usatoday.com.

Q: Why is the shift to mobile devices disrupting so many tech companies' profits?

A: The shift of Internet access from desktop computer to mobile devices has been a wave that's overwhelming many tech companies.

Some of the companies being hit by the trend are easy to understand, especially the companies that dominated PC manufacturing.

Shares of Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Microsoft, for instance, have lagged or been under pressure as the growth of demand for PCs has cooled.

But there have also been many victims in this technology shift that many investors didn't expect. Facebook and Google, for instance, are considered leading companies in the Internet-enabled future of computing. But both companies are being hurt, so far, by the rise of mobile access.

Google gets much less money from ads placed on mobile devices because they're less effective than ads on the computer screen. Meanwhile, Facebook has a challenge placing as many ads on the tiny screens of smartphones as it puts on the Web version of its popular site.

The shift to mobile Internet access is one of the biggest disruptions for tech stocks since the migration from dial-up access to broadband, says Jordan Rohan, analyst at Stifel Nicolaus.

Investors have underestimated how difficult it is for older Internet companies to adapt their business models to be relevant as the Internet moves to mobile devices, he says.

ADDING Membership Development Communications

Richard Scully

Following the Chamber Nation conference in Phoenix last month and after getting so much positive feedback, we're making some pretty big changes here at Chamber Nation. One of the things we heard clearly is a need to create a program that helps our customers convey the extrem value of membership in a very easy and concise way.

Since we have been working on a number of strategies, this feedback along with many other suggestions have caused us to make a decision. This strategy will be rolling out as the Chamber "AND" Commerce program that will help our customers dramatically expand their relevancy proposition to members and prospective members.

Notice that this little change from "Chamber of Commerce" to "Chamber and Commerce" truly reflects the power of this new messaging.

This program is designed specifically for our Chamber of Commerce customers and their members in order to provide the most advanced tool ever to retain the customers we all help members to secure. This is a first class program that is unique, secure and ready later this month that we know will impress all who view and use this new platform.

System Update - new icons, slideshow, event reg advice

New Member's Area Icons: "Pick Your Color!"
Under Member's Area Features (the section that general members can see), we have replaced the icons with newer ones.  These icons can be tinted to the color of your choice.  By default, they will be gray... so you may want to pick a color via MMS Configuration, Framework Configuration (look for Icon Color).

OR... if you'd like... let us know, and our team can pick a color for you!

Event Registration Advice
Setting up event registrations can be tricky at times.  The event registration module gives you the ability to build a complex online form to allow for registration for conferences and conventions.  This is a powerful tool, but if it's not set up in the right way, it can cause grief.

Packages -v- Custom Fields
One of the frequent errors is to use packages in ways that are better handled by checkbox or drop-down fields.  Packages are mutually-exclusive base prices for events.  But the custom fields like checkboxes and drop-downs allow for creating add-on options for events with great flexibility.

Field Dependency - asking additional questions based on prior answers
A new feature to event registration, Field Dependency, allows you to build more complex forms, such that if a registrant answers yes to a given question, you can ask for additional information related to the first question.  These dependencies can be based on packages, as well as custom checkbox fields.

Need Assistance?
Sam Azzam is a specialist in this area of the system so if you have a big event coming up, and would like us to review the event registration you've set up, just let him know and he'll look it over.  He can be reached at (855) 233-6362 Ext. 704

Slideshow Manager:
This is another brand-new feature.  The slideshow manager allows you to create custom slideshows and display them on any of your content pages or websites.  You can create these by going to 'Slideshow Manager' under the admin menu.  There you can create your slideshow, pick your custom dimensions, and upload all of your photos.  The slideshow manager will generate a block of code that you can copy and then paste into your content pages (in source mode) and the slideshow will appear on the page.

As normal please feel free to contact support for any questions you may have.
