The Portland Area Historical Society will be hosting an event at the Portland Theater featuring Prominent Women of Portland as part of the Tri River
"Spring Into the Past" week-end.  The public is invited to tour our display. 11-5 on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday.

Spring is here, and its time for the Portland Garden Clubs Annual Geranium Sale.  Solid colors in red, white, light pink, dark pink, salmon, are available for pre-order.  Pre-ordered plants sell for $2.50 each.
You may call in your order at (616) 299-8752, or order by email to bettynumb1@gmail.com.  All pre-orders must be submitted by Tuesday, April 21.   

There will be a limited quantity, so place your order early as these hearty beautiful plants go quickly!   
 
Curbside pickup at the Portland Red Mill will be on Thursday, May 5th from Noon to 6pm.  Stay in your vehicle and pay with exact cash or check placed in a baggy or envelope. Your geraniums will be loaded in your vehicle by one of our volunteers.  Any pre-orders still waiting after 6pm May 5th will go on sale to the public.  The sale will run until 12:00 noon, or until all geraniums have been sold. The price for the geraniums purchased at the public sale will be $3.00.

If you are interested in volunteering to assist with the sale, please contact Cathy at (616) 284-1213.  Proceeds help us to beautify downtown Portland, have educational speakers at our meetings, and make monetary donations to local organizations.

Kent Street Scape Project

Public Workshop

The City of Portland is planning improvements on Kent Street between Academy Street and Grand River Avenue to revitalize the downtown core.  Improvements include replacement of water main and sanitary sewer, drainage improvements, electrical modifications and upgrades, reconstruction of the road, sidewalk replacement and streetscape enhancements.  The City, through its engineers at Fleis & VandenBrink, recently completed a parking study that will help facilitate the design of the new roadway and will be available to the public.  
Public workshops have been scheduled for 

  1. Thursday, May 19th from 9am to 12pm
  2. Tuesday,   May 31st from 5pm to 8pm
at Portland City Hall, 259 Kent St.  
City engineers and staff will be available to present and discuss the results of the parking study and the project in general and to solicit feedback on streetscape elements and other enhancements being considered for inclusion in the project.  Please join us!

Portland VFW Post 4090, the American Legion, and Auxiliary will again host services honoring U.S. Service People.

10am begins the march from Veterans Memorial Bridge, up Bridge Street with stops and recognition at Lehman Funeral Homes and the Portland Cemetery.  

Followed with the annual Memorial Day Chicken BBQ hosted by PUMC and VFW 4090     11am - 2pm
